Integration is directly related to self-actualization (becoming who you truly are). Our unconscious mind holds a lot of valuable information about ourselves. When it is denied, it remains dormant and arises without our awareness. Integration with the unconscious elements of our mind allows us to aim towards our true nature. It is in this wholeness where we can accept, understand, and express ourselves.

Integration of the anima or animus begins with awareness. We must realize our own masculine and feminine traits, especially when we project them into the world without our intention. This awareness will lead to understanding. An understanding will help get to the root causes of these projections. From understanding, comes integration....
Again, unconscious material is unconscious because we suppress or deny these inner thoughts and emotions.

Step 1 is acceptance. In this awareness, we can begin to accept what is hidden within our minds. This is a process of building awareness about what is unconsciously arising without our conscious intention.
Step 2 is understanding. We can learn about our Self by becoming curious about where certain elements of our nature come from. It could be past events or experiences, as well as traits picked up from others that surround us. Once we can connect the cause (root) to the effect (the physical manifestation), integration is possible.
Step 3 is integration. This is where we take what we learned and apply it towards change. The word integration is defined as, “coordination of mental processes into normal effective personality or with the environment.” It is a process of taking chaos and providing some order.
